FED 5 INTRODUCING THE FED 5
The Fed company, based in Kharkov, Ukraine; is noted in the history books for its production of excellent and reliable cameras throughout a span of over 70 years. FED cameras began mass production in 1934, one of the many firms to spearhead its nation’s charge from an classic agrarian economy into a modern industrial state. Their first camera was named, sensibly, the Fed 1 - a faithful copy of the then state-of-the-art German Leica II. This hardworking screw-mount camera offered nearly the same image quality as the hideously expensive Leica II, but at a far more realistic price. It was an instant hit, and over 700,000 were produced between 1934 and 1955.
From this point on, the legacy continued, with the FED 2, FED 3, and FED 4. Each new edition incorporated improvements over the previous model, and continued to move parallel to the design progression of the current Leica screw-mount models of the time. In addition, a smattering of other camera models were produced, including half-frame and 3D stereo models.
Originally introduced in 1977, the Fed 5 is the final refinement of this screw-mount production line, featuring the most advanced optical lens and imaging system of the line. Continuing in the tradition of its predecessors, the Fed 5 offers exceptionally sharp images and precise exposure control, usually only found on much more expensive models. A work-horse, mechanical, steel beast that requires skill, but rewards you handsomely for your efforts. Fully manual, it needs no battery but demands attention to detail and an steely dedication to learn its abilities and secrets.

I once saw giggerotar's fed 5 during the sentosa outing and it was super bulky and complicated. Perhaps giggerotar or jim can elaborate more.. :)

it's heavy.. lol. anyway, mine is 5B which doesnt come with light meter so not sure how the light meter works. can ask john about that. :P Basically, it's a range finder. where u set ur own aperture, shutterspd and focus. u look thru the viewfinder see 2 images for u to focus. erm.. dunno how to explain.. lol.

oh.. and yes.. it's a beauty.. and definitely something which 'force' u to learn more. :P

im stuck between getting a rangefinder or a XA2!
The Killer Gerbil- 11-28-2007
Yo ranon depends how u like to shoot.
Personally I'll get a rangefinder for portraits and scenary and a compact point and shoot for street shots which requires fast action.

gahhhhh! but my knowledge of cameras is really minimal and rangefinders are really a complicated bunch. however it really appeals to me, looking at what a bessa-R, voightlander, contax and hasselblad can do. hence my decision in getting a lowest priced rangefinder to learn more.

you can always use the sunny 16 rule for rangefinders. I tried that on my FED 3 and everything seems to be ok. now time to try B&W on the FED 3.
You can also google on how to use a range finder. it'll be alot easier to understand if you have one in your hand.
