HOlGA NEWBIE.Got some questions to clarify ..
HOLA ! Eh im getting a Holga 120N soon.I dont quite understand the Mask part. what 6X6.Means what ? when I buy the Holga have Mask or not ? Than the film counter window have what 16 and 12 . I buying the 35mm adaptor too .I was wondering if I need to unload my film in a dark bag or what ? Quite confusing abit.Than I heard the superheadz adaptor has an automatic rewinder dont have to unload in a dark bag. I dont wish to unload my film in a dark bag at all and I am not sure if by using the normal 35mm adaptor I will save the hassle of it or not. And I also heard there are usually blurry pics taken.eh wana avoid this man.Dont wanna waste film.Hence I need your advices .DOs and DONTs when handling a holga 120N. Your advices will be appreciated I visited Squarefrog webbie already. "You encounter blurry pics when you move the camera while the shutter is open. The best way to avoid this is to put your Holga on something sturdy like a wall or a table while taking your picture. This is less of an issue when using 'N' mode, as the shutter speed is much quicker than humanly possible." What do u mean ? u mean when i press the shutter open I cannot move my cam too much or what ? and I am sure the newer 120N is rumored not to have Light leaks right ?so in that case i dont have to use a black tape and tape it around ?

That's a lot of questions  "Eh im getting a Holga 120N soon.I dont quite understand the Mask part. what 6X6.Means what ? when I buy the Holga have Mask or not ? Than the film counter window have what 16 and 12 . " Holga usually come with the 6X6 mask. It allows you to take square format photos. A new HOlga usually comes with one. There is no film counter, just a red 'window' to show you the number of exposures taken. If you are new to this, the number is actually printed on the back of the 120 film, so the numbers will show as you scroll/advance the film. Holga has a 'switch' to let you choose 16 or 12 shots. "I buying the 35mm adaptor too .I was wondering if I need to unload my film in a dark bag or what ? Quite confusing abit.Than I heard the superheadz adaptor has an automatic rewinder dont have to unload in a dark bag. I dont wish to unload my film in a dark bag at all and I am not sure if by using the normal 35mm adaptor I will save the hassle of it or not. " Is you will need to do so (ie. use a black bag). Superheads adapter is a better solution but costs quite a lot more. It allows you to use your Holga like any 35mm camera, including rewind without a black bag. "And I also heard there are usually blurry pics taken.eh wana avoid this man.Dont wanna waste film.Hence I need your advices .DOs and DONTs when handling a holga 120N. Your advices will be appreciated " Don't want blurry shots? Shoot digital lo. Nah, joking. Digital also many take blurry shots. It means you have to shoot in bright daylight, hold still (your camera) and pray (yeah, pray!) "You encounter blurry pics when you move the camera while the shutter is open. The best way to avoid this is to put your Holga on something sturdy like a wall or a table while taking your picture. This is less of an issue when using 'N' mode, as the shutter speed is much quicker than humanly possible." Yes, only if you are in the Bulb mode, where you can open the shutter as long as you want (or as long as your fingers don't break), you will need a tripod or something stable to place your camera on. Else long exposure will result in crazy blur long exposures ... eh ... that will be cool wor! "What do u mean ? u mean when i press the shutter open I cannot move my cam too much or what ? " It's like asking you to hold a cup of boiling hot coffee ... you move too much and see what happens lor   Nah, it means that if you move your cam while pressing the shutter, you will get blur shots. But ... blur shots are sometimes the best ones! "and I am sure the newer 120N is rumored not to have Light leaks right ?so in that case i dont have to use a black tape and tape it around ?" Usually no need. Light leaks rocks though. I hope mine has some but unfortunately no.

haha thank you so much for answering my queries.Never tried plastic lens before man...ok la I think is ok to go for something that u really wanna experiment with. The fact is I have a colorsplash flash hence I wanna use it. I could have gotten a holga 135BC and save all these trouble. But personally i still feel holga 120N the best.I just feel is like this.Besides I want to have a collection of the sprocket pics >.<" damm nice What do you think of it ?

asfeexiated- 08-15-2008

Here's my share. Holga 120N is my first lomo cam and is still my one and only lomo cam. Though it's not ideal to use at night, the pictures it captures (with the help of the films as well) were breath-taking. Well honestly, most lomographers would advise you to get another lomo camera since you're a newbie, because a Holga camera is rather expensive to start with. But ANYWAY.. ( I agree with unker that you do have alot of questions  ) "I dont quite understand the Mask part. what 6X6.Means what ? when I buy the Holga have Mask or not ? Than the film counter window have what 16 and 12 . " The package usually comes with a 6X6 (the one that gives 12 shots) mask and a 6x4 (forgot, but its the one that gives you 16 shots) mask. 6x6 mask gives you square photos while a 6x4 gives rectangular shot. One tip: if you want some heavy vignettes, dont use any mask at all! It'll still be a square photo so set your counter to 12. & The rest is explained by unker. "I buying the 35mm adaptor too. I was wondering if I need to unload my film in a dark bag or what ? Quite confusing abit.Than I heard the superheadz adaptor has an automatic rewinder dont have to unload in a dark bag. I dont wish to unload my film in a dark bag at all and I am not sure if by using the normal 35mm adaptor I will save the hassle of it or not. " (Adding on to unker's words) You're using a Holga, so it's best that you use 120mm film since it's designed to do so. Buying and using a 35mm adapter is like using a vivitar, minus the wide angle and crisp images. "And I also heard there are usually blurry pics taken.eh wana avoid this man.Dont wanna waste film.Hence I need your advices .DOs and DONTs when handling a holga 120N. Your advices will be appreciated " Usually, even when your hands are a tad shaky, just as long as your Holga is set to N mode the pictures will be 95% clear and sharp, provided that you adjusted your focal length at the lens. Best to use your Holga under sunlight because it gives you the best colours. The B mode is for long exposures; you hold the shutter release to open the shutter for as long as you want and close it by releasing it. Some people tend to forget to check whether their Holga was in B or N mode. Some of these people get blur photos because it's set to B mode. When it's in N mode, it has only a fixed shutter speed. "and I am sure the newer 120N is rumored not to have Light leaks right ?so in that case i dont have to use a black tape and tape it around ?" I don't tape my Holga and I never got light leaks. The only times when you will get light leaks is what your back cover is loose. This applies to ALL film-based cameras. Anyway, it's fun to have light leaks sometimes. They create something in photos. Something in which we can't point out. "I could have gotten a holga 135BC and save all these trouble. But personally i still feel holga 120N the best.I just feel is like this.Besides I want to have a collection of the sprocket pics >.<" damm nice" Forget about the Holga 135BC, you might as well get yourself a vivitar and mod it for B mode and mx. If you want sprockets, you can DIY and mod your mask part, or if youre lazy just buy the 35mm PANO adapter. I'm letting mine go btw, at $10. Havent advertise yet. I only used it once and yes, I got it because of the sprockets effect. Now I'm letting it go, because I wanna just shoot 120mm on my Holga from now on as there's no point using 35mm for Holga. All in all, a Holga is a very easy camera to use. Well, at least it's much easier to LEARN how to use it than learning the LCA (hehe). You need someone to teach and show you hands-on on how to load and unload your film because it's will sound like a 'long and complex' process if we type out all the instructions here. There's alot to talk about the Holga. I'll let the others share. Ian! Holga King! Where're you! :P

Where're you! :P Thank you for the replies.Hmm ya i will probably purchase a 120 film and try, never try before also.Besides Im gonna ask ndroo to dress up my little toy holga for me.Not so soon. But I really love his craftsmanship alot.Is totally smooth and it looks like what it has been manufactured to be.:) hehe I getting superheadz adaptor,is abit ex but is 2 in 1 and it has a rewind switch so I dont have to unload my film in a dark bag.XD~ So excited about all these coming man. Any seasoned holga users here can tell me is there a difference on the images in terms of color, contrast, vignettes between the Holga 120N and Holga 135BC ? Just by viewing flickr itself I only realised the Holga 120N has more natural vignette effects other than that I'm not so sure about it.

Hmm i heard is harder to get vignette effect when using 35mm film on holga ? So I should use the mask or without mask ? 6X6 and 6X4 I get both when I buy a Holga 120N or what ?

caljoephua- 08-15-2008

woah, your questions bombarding. you'll get a 6x6 and a 6x4.5 mask when you buy the holga, no doubt.(allows 12 and 16 exposures with 120 film) 35mm backs and adaptors are supposed seperately sold, but people do bundle them together. Personally i prefer shooting with the mask on, cause i lazy to tape the thing up when shooting without mask. But you can just do what you like and experiment. It's all part of the fun. And to end off, just buy the camera. Dont think, just buy!

sumlom- 08-15-2008

holga sides sure got blur. dont think you can get a perfectly sharp shot. cos its plastic ma. thats wat makes it unique. but using 35 on the holga vignettes will almost non existent. the superheadz adaptor is a a mask itself. so when using u just take out any mask inside the holga and put in the adaptor. and yea u get both masks for a new set. think many old thread address this issues, can go dig up and read.

Normal kodak shops got do ? or only certain places only ?

"maybe i should buy one cheap 120 film. How much is it to develop and scan 120 film ? Normal kodak shops got do ? or only certain places only ?" You can get 120mm films at Ruby's (Peninsula Shopping Center) and Triple D (Burlington square). Ruby sells one Provia 100F at $5.20, I'd rather you go to Ruby to get your film, then develop at DDD because Ruby takes a week to process your rolls while DDD takes at most 2-3 hours. Go to DDD and you'll get a Lomotioner discount of 10% btw ;) If you'd like to know more about your holga and various other issues on it, come on down to the next Electrico exhibition and approach any of us Lomotioners. The 'Holga king' will be there lol.
