LT of Jan 08 - Panning
LOMOTION's Theme of the Month, Jan 2008 - PANNING The theme of Jan 2008 is "Panning". It's going to be more challenging than the first theme given it's technical nature. What is panning you might ask? The technique of swinging the camera to follow movement of a subject so that the subject is sharp and clear, while the background is blurred, giving a sense of motion to the photo. Here are three examples of panning on flickr: 1, 2, 3 Some guidelines for the theme: - Film and digital photographs are welcomed but film entries will be favoured over digital ones - No photoshop works please - Please title all entries - There are no limits to the number of entries that you can submit - Last day for entries: 31 January 2008 Feel free to ask questions if there are uncertainties.

bike at night.. my first attempt at panning last night (with digital) after we discussed on the next theme. it wasnt easy.. but. it's great to learn stuffs like that. :) .. opps.. forgot title.. i think day time would be better, cos night, the exposure too long. :(

Compared to Jim, my digital attempts at nite failed utterly. However this is a very good theme for the month. Everybody should try to participate in this one.

Erm bro. "The technique of swinging the camera to follow movement of a subject so that the subject is sharp and clear, while the background is blurred, giving a sense of motion to the photo." Wahahaha you really never read ah. I can sense your excitement.

Is shooting while on a moving platform (car, escalator) considered panning technically? I think it's better to make this clear.

machiavellian- 01-01-2008

lolol! i think can cheat the pan with a tunnelvision lo

The Killer Gerbil- 01-01-2008

Technically panning is when you on a still and only you camera is doing the job.

I think there still exist some grey area over here. A good example I can think of would be shooting a moving car on the road from inside another moving car. Another good example is filmmakers using dollies to capture footage.

Haha That's what I've been trying to ask george last night too! It applies the same logic : moving with the subject and capturing it with motion blur I think as long as that objective and outlook is reached, it'll really be up to the photographer's creativity to get that special shot hor?

koki_2706- 01-01-2008

Quite true, Eileen. As for your questions to george last night, guess I was too high to take note of them haha. It's time now for me to stop asking and better get down to shoot.
