Outdoor Sessions Volume 2
Natural rock climbing is a sport which is much more hazardous as compared to Indoor Sport Climbing. Just last week I was attacked by a swarm of stingers and had to go to the hospital immediately. And also on the same day, me and a friend encountered one of the most venomous local snakes. We have even come across a cobra and much more interesting animals. Once, my friend had a relatively huge chunk of meat from his finger ripped off from his palm. And about 2 years ago, a caucasian man died when he fell in one of the routes at the quarry. Camera: LC-A Film: Ektachrome 64 Cross Processed at DDD 1. This is known as the "Direct Route" at the quarry. It has features like crimps, underhangs, slabs and cracks for climbers to train their techniques. It is also a very easy route for me and my friends but we climb this for practice. 2. The camera was wrongly set but I love it. My friends are having a chit chat session while waiting to climb. I was belaying another friend and got the cheeks to pick up my camera and took a photo. Of course I had locked the rope system so in any case my friend fell, she would be anchored. 3. In this picture, I am not the one climbing, instead I am attached to a system that I made to ensure that I can hang freely from the rocks. Below is one of my friends practicing a "dyno" move where you have to leap off from one rock face and grab on to an out of reach rock face. This is another route at Dairy Farm known as ABCD, the area where the caucasian man fell and died from multiple skull fracture. 4. This is my friend Ayub, he is almost reaching me, but he is still far away from the top as he still has more than 10 meters to go. 5. Here Ayub is taking a slight break and is chalking his hands to have better grip when your hands are sweaty or because of the wet rock surface. In this picture, you can see my system that hooks me to the wall. Prussiking (Ascending / Descending Techniques) 1. This is a picture of my friend prussiking / ascending up a rope. It seems very near but on the -*test*-('") date, we are to move up a rope about 3 to 4 storeys high and do a 'self-rescue' where we remove our prussiking system to transfer to an abseiling system where we descend. This technique is used by Cavers or those highly paid window washers. It can be used to go up any flat wall or go down any type of wall. 2. This is my friend who is training me and my friend. He is also our -*test*-('")er. If you noticed, the high/low elements in the background can also be seen in Showdown. Well that's because it's held at our workplace. Singaporean artists are very sluggish I must say. 3. This is the SingTel tower in our campsite. It's something huge you cant miss it.
