Scan Negative/Slide by Normal Scanner or Film Scanner?
Would like to check with you guys, how do you scan your negative/slide? Can we scan by normal scanner or we should get a film scanner? I am thinking of buy a scanner/film scanner to scan my negative/slide for long term usage insteed of being charged S$5 or S$8 for each cd by the shop. :? Any recommendation? And of course, it would be great if you know the price~~~~

I use a Canon 8400F flatbed film scanner which cost me $300. Works great so far. It scans 35mm panoramic and 120 film too. Jim uses an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo but that costs more. I think it's wise to invest in one in the long run. This link might be helpful. :)

what nobody tells you before you buy a film scanner: scanning film on a flat bed scanner can be rather time consuming. be warned!

BTW, few months back, Black Beauty went down to SLS and Funan to scout for the 8600f, returned with nothing because it was all out of stock. Im not sure if they did replenish it or not...

Flatbed film scanner would be a good investment..since it's flatbed..can scan prints as well as other documents. Ya..you'll need a rather fast pc. If not just sent to Cindy Scanning Services loh. Lurgee got no time..unless u wanna wait long long. Haha. :p

Oh mine is 8600F. :P BTW, I'm quite disappointed with the scanner lately. Seems like it doesn't read xpro negative properly. Always overexposed! I've been sending my films to labs for scanning as the colours turned out better and it saved me tons of time!

Ya..I agree that the lab scans give better colours then the scanner auto mode but actually scanning urself also takes some skill and lots of time :p Poor man can't afford to send to lab.

so how? scanner or no scanner?

cyanwater- 10-14-2007

so how? scanner or no scanner? I think students have more time to scan and it does save money in the long run especially if you plan to buy horizon(which I can smell). To get good results with my canoscan(it's possible but I believe the lab still does a better job), I need to manually adjust each and every picture which takes up a lot of time.

when was still in nafa. i saw they had this.. film scanner thingy by nikon, for 35mm and 120mm, looks pro and aint big size. prolly like a... lenght-4vodavoda bottles in a line Height-3/4 of the bottles. (sorry lousy comparison i noe!) wonder anyone of you used that b4?

the Nikon cool scan scanners are fast and excellent quality as good as those from the lab, but they cost a bomb :P minimal $1k and up, and only the top of the range is able to take 120 format im looking at Plustek film scanners, they seems to be the most affordable specialise film scanners but i think they are not able to take 120 format...only 35mm http://www.plustek.com/product/series.asp?s_id=4
